Concepts / High School Road and Gateway Drive

Concepts posts will expand on ideas discussed in each Fatal Crash Review post.

  • These ideas will be added to the RESOURCES section of the site.

  • I will try to keep these short and "screenshot-able" for easy sharing and include at least one link for a deeper dive into the subject.

  • Each Fatal Crash Review post will be tagged with the concepts discussed.

  • Once the resources tab gets built up, there may be weeks without a Concepts post because all of the concepts in that post have already been covered.

Speed Tables

Looking for a cheat code to instantly make your streets safer? Speed tables are the cheat code. Speed tables are like speed bumps, but they're designed to be taken at the speed limit. If your city has spent decades building roads designed for 50 mph (wide lanes and long sight lines) and slapping 35 mph speed limit signs on the side at the end of the project, speed tables may be right for you! Speed tables can be shaped to be effective at any speeds between 20 and 40 mph. Much faster than that and you'll cause problems. These are perfect for urban areas, and unlike the police, they never take a day off or pick which vehicles are worthy of enforcement. The laws of physics never take a day off!

Raised Intersections

Similar to a speed table in concept and results, a raised intersection is a serious investment in safety. The entire intersection is raised to be level with the sidewalk, which creates completely level crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. Each entry point for drivers includes a gradual incline that is rated for the designed speed for that area. Speed ranges for this type of infrastructure would be similar to speed tables, 20 to 40 mph. Drivers trying to traverse intersections like this at speeds of 50 mph or more will have a bad time. Bollards could also be installed at each corner for additional protection. The bollards are especially important in a place like Indianapolis, where no safety centered culture for drivers exists currently.
